How much of your pay do you actually keep?

Your gross wage is reduced by two things before it reaches your account: PAYG income tax and the Medicare levy. Superannuation is paid on top by your employer rather than deducted, so a salary of $90,000 with 12% super costs your employer $100,800 but is taxed on $90,000.

How Australian take-home pay is worked out.

The same five steps the calculator runs, in the open. No black box.

The formula

take-home = gross - income tax - medicare levy

income tax applied in slices, by bracket
medicare levy 2% of taxable income
super gross x 12%, paid on top, never subtracted
  1. 1Convert to an annual figure. An hourly, weekly or fortnightly wage is first annualised, because income tax is worked out on a year, not a pay cycle.
  2. 2Apply the brackets in slices. Each slice of income is taxed at its own rate. Only the part inside a bracket pays that bracket rate.
  3. 3Add the Medicare levy. 2% of taxable income, shading in from zero across the low-income thresholds rather than switching on at once.
  4. 4Do not subtract super. The Superannuation Guarantee is an employer cost paid on top of your salary. It never comes out of take-home pay.
  5. 5Divide back to your cycle. The annual result is split across every pay cycle at once, so a fortnightly and an hourly figure always agree.

What comes out of your pay.

Australia taxes income progressively, so each slice is taxed at its own rate. A summary of the 2026-27 resident rates is below. The full table, the tax owed at each threshold and the bracket-by-bracket working are on Tax Brackets and Income Tax Calculator.

What this calculator includes, and what it does not model.

Published in full, because an estimate you cannot check is worth nothing. What is missing is listed as plainly as what is there. Study loan repayments and the Medicare levy surcharge are deliberately kept off this page and given their own calculators, because both are worked out on a different income figure than your salary: HECS Repayment Calculator and Medicare Levy Surcharge Calculator.

The floor under your hourly rate.

Tax decides what you keep. An award decides what you are owed in the first place, and the two are worked out by different bodies under different rules. If a modern award covers your job, your rate has a legal floor set by the Fair Work Commission that moves every 1 July, and no agreement can pay under it.

A minimum wage is not a take-home figure: the calculator above turns an award rate into what actually lands in your account. Rates by industry are in Award Pay Rates, rates by job title are in Pay Rates by Occupation, and changes as they are handed down are in Pay Rate News. Every award figure carries the clause it came from and the date we read it.

Pay calculator questions, answered.

How do you calculate take-home pay?

Take-home pay is your gross pay less PAYG income tax and the Medicare levy. Superannuation is not subtracted, because your employer pays it on top of your salary. Because income tax is progressive, an hourly, weekly or fortnightly figure is first converted to its annual equivalent, the brackets are applied, and the result is divided back to your pay cycle.

How is income tax calculated in Australia?

Australia taxes income in slices, not at one flat rate. For 2026-27 the first $18,200 is tax free, income from $18,201 to $45,000 is taxed at 15c in the dollar, $45,001 to $135,000 at 30c, $135,001 to $190,000 at 37c, and anything above $190,000 at 45c. Only the slice inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket rate.

Did tax rates change for 2026-27?

Yes. The second bracket rate fell from 16c in the dollar in 2025-26 to 15c in 2026-27, which lowers tax for everyone earning above the tax-free threshold. Switch the financial year in the calculator to see the difference on your own income.

Is superannuation taken out of my pay?

No. The Superannuation Guarantee is an employer cost paid on top of your salary, currently 12% of your earnings for 2026-27. An advertised salary is normally the base figure before super. Some offers instead quote a total remuneration package that bundles super into the headline number, so check the wording, and use the "amount includes super" switch if yours does.

What is the Medicare levy?

The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income. You pay nothing below the lower threshold, a reduced amount that shades in between the lower and upper thresholds, and the full 2% above the upper threshold. The levy is separate from the Medicare levy surcharge, which applies to higher earners without private hospital cover.

Does this calculator include HECS or HELP repayments?

Not this one. Compulsory study loan repayments are worked out on repayment income, which is a different and usually larger figure than salary, so folding them into a wage calculator would mislead. They have a dedicated page with the ATO thresholds instead. If you have a study loan, your actual take-home is lower than the figure shown here by the repayment amount.

Why does my payslip differ from this figure?

Payroll withholds tax using the ATO withholding schedules for your pay cycle, which are rounded and which ignore offsets like the Low Income Tax Offset. This calculator works out your annual position instead, so small differences per cycle are normal and usually settle when you lodge your return.

What is the take home pay for $90,000 in Australia?

For 2026-27, $90,000 leaves $70,680 after income tax and the Medicare levy, which is $2,718.46 a fortnight or $1,359.23 a week. That is $17,520 of income tax plus $1,800 of Medicare levy. A study loan repayment or the Medicare levy surcharge would reduce it further.

How much tax do I pay on $1,200 a week in Australia?

A $1,200 week is $62,400 a year. For 2026-27 that attracts $9,240 of income tax plus $1,248 of Medicare levy, so about $201.69 a week comes out and roughly $998.31 lands in your account. Your payslip will differ by a few dollars because the ATO weekly schedule rounds to the dollar.

Is my salary sent anywhere?

No. Every figure is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, logged or stored, and it clears when you close the tab. The share URL puts your inputs in the page fragment, which browsers never send with a request.

Pay and tax terms, defined.

The words that appear on a payslip and in the calculator above.

PAYG withholding

Tax your employer takes out of each pay and sends to the ATO on your behalf, using the ATO withholding schedules.

Medicare levy

2% of taxable income that funds public health care, reduced or removed below the low-income thresholds.

Superannuation Guarantee

The minimum super an employer must pay on top of your salary. 12% of qualifying earnings for 2026-27, the base that replaced ordinary time earnings when Payday Super started on 1 July 2026.

Marginal rate

The rate applied to your next dollar earned. Not the rate you pay on your whole income.

Effective rate

Total tax divided by gross pay. Always lower than the marginal rate, because earlier slices are taxed less.

Ordinary time earnings

The earnings base super is calculated on. Ordinary hours, loadings and most allowances, but not overtime.

Total remuneration package

A salary figure quoted with super already inside it. The taxable salary is the package grossed down by the super rate.

Low Income Tax Offset

A non-refundable offset of up to $700 that reduces tax at assessment. It does not change your payslip.
