Parental Leave Pay Calculator

Work out your Parental Leave Pay for 2026-27: how many days your family gets, what they pay before and after tax, and the super the ATO adds. The government payment is $200.94 a day, or $1,004.70 for a 5 day week, for days taken from 1 July 2026. A child born or adopted from 1 July 2026 brings up to 130 days, 26 weeks, and 20 of them are kept for the second parent when you have a partner. It is taxable income, paid through your employer's payroll or by Services Australia, and it sits on top of any paid leave your employer gives you.

Worked examples, with the arithmetic.

The same sums the tool runs, on real figures. Every number below is computed by the tested engine from the published rates, so the prose and the tool can never disagree.

How much is Parental Leave Pay a day in 2026-27?

7.6 x $26.44 an hour = 200.944
to the cent = $200.94
5 days = $1,004.70

$200.94 a day before tax for days taken from 1 July 2026. Section 65(2) of the Paid Parental Leave Act sets it at 7.6 times the hourly national minimum wage, which is $26.44 from 1 July 2026, and Services Australia prints the same $200.94. A 5 day week is $1,004.70, 20 cents under the $1,004.90 weekly minimum wage. Days taken in 2025-26 were paid $189.62, 7.6 times $24.95.

How much is the full 130 days for a child born on 2 November 2026?

130 days x $200.94 = $26,122.20
tax with $40,000 other income = - $8,175.94
after tax = $17,946.26
super, 12% = $3,134.66

$26,122.20 before tax for a single parent taking all 130 days, 2 November 2026 to 30 April 2027. With $40,000 of other income in 2026-27 the payment adds $8,175.94 of income tax and Medicare levy, leaving $17,946.26. The ATO then pays about $3,134.66 into super after 30 June 2027, because the child was born after 1 July 2025.

How many days can a parent with a partner take?

family days, born 9 August 2026 = 130
reserved for the partner = - 20
most one parent can take = 110
110 days x $200.94 = $22,103.40

110 days, worth $22,103.40. In Services Australia's own example Dom and Ashley adopt on 9 August 2026. Dom, on $170,000, meets the income test and Ashley, on $230,000, does not, so only Dom can claim. Because he has a partner, 20 of the 130 days stay reserved for the other parent, and he can get at most 110.

Can I get Parental Leave Pay on $215,000 if my partner earns $90,000?

your income = $215,000 > $186,487
combined                          = $305,000 <= $386,525
result = met on the family test

Yes, on the family income test. This is Services Australia's Reema example: a baby born 2 July 2026, her 2025-26 income of $215,000 is over the $186,487 individual limit, but with her partner's $90,000 the family's $305,000 is under the $386,525 family limit.

How much tax comes out of each fortnight?

fortnight, 10 days = $2,009.40
Services Australia, 15% = - $301.41 = $1,707.99
employer, Schedule 1 with threshold = - $278.00 = $1,731.40

It depends on who pays you. Services Australia withholds 15% unless you ask for a different rate, so $301.41 of a $2,009.40 fortnight. An employer withholds at your usual rate from the tax tables: $278.00 a fortnight when you claim the tax-free threshold from them. Either way it is taxable income, and the tax is settled in your return.

What if the days run across 1 July?

7 days in 2025-26 x $189.62 = $1,327.34
13 days in 2026-27 x $200.94 = $2,612.22
total                             = $3,939.56

Each day is paid at the rate for the financial year it falls in, not the year of the birth. 20 days from 22 June 2026 come to $3,939.56: 7 at the 2025-26 rate and 13 at the 2026-27 rate.

Is this accurate, and how does it work?

The method is published rather than described. Nothing here is a black box, and the limits are listed as plainly as the workings.

  1. 1Set the daily rate from the minimum wage. Section 65(2) of the Paid Parental Leave Act 2010 sets each day at 7.6 times the hourly National Minimum Wage in operation on that day. From 1 July 2026 that is 7.6 x $26.44, or $200.94, the figure Services Australia prints. Days taken in 2025-26 were $189.62. The rate goes by the financial year each day falls in, not the year of the birth, so a block that runs across 1 July is paid at two rates. The calculator derives the rate rather than storing it, and the site will not build if the two disagree by a cent.
  2. 2Count the days by date of birth or adoption. Section 31ABA sets the days for each child: 110 from 1 July 2024, 120 from 1 July 2025, 130 from 1 July 2026. A parent with a partner can take at most 110 of the 130, so 20 are reserved for the other parent; for a child born in 2025-26 it was 105 of 120. A single parent gets every day. Days are counted here Monday to Friday, five a week, from the first day you choose.
  3. 3Check the income test. Sections 37 and 39 test your adjusted taxable income for the financial year before the earlier of the birth and your claim. For a birth or claim from 1 July 2026 you pass with $186,487 or less of 2025-26 income. If you are over it, you can pass on the family test, where you and your partner together have $386,525 or less; a single parent is tested against the family limit on their own income. Adjusted taxable income is taxable income plus items such as reportable fringe benefits and reportable super contributions, so it can be higher than your salary.
  4. 4Check the work test. You need to have worked 10 of the 13 months before the birth or adoption, which Services Australia counts as 295 of 392 days, and at least 330 hours in those 10 months, with no gap of more than 12 weeks between work days. Sections 32, 33 and 36 of the Act set the same 295 days, 392 days, 330 hours and 84 day break. Paid leave counts as work. There are exceptions, such as a premature birth or pregnancy complications, which Services Australia decides.
  5. 5Take off the tax. Parental Leave Pay is taxable income. When your employer pays it, they withhold tax at your usual rate from the tax tables, which the Tax Withheld Calculator shows for any pay. When Services Australia pays it, they withhold 15% each fortnight unless you ask for a different rate, and if that is not enough you pay the rest at tax time. The calculator shows both, then works out the tax the payment really adds to your year from your other income, the tax rates, the low income tax offset and the Medicare levy.
  6. 6Add the super and your employer's own leave. For a child born or adopted from 1 July 2025, the ATO pays a Paid Parental Leave super contribution into your fund after the financial year ends, at the super guarantee rate, now 12%, plus a small amount for nominal interest under section 115C. Your employer does not have to add super of their own on it. Services Australia says you can take Parental Leave Pay before, during or after maternity or parental leave, annual leave, long service leave, and section 99A of the Act keeps your employer's own obligations in place, so employer paid parental leave is on top, not instead.

Parental Leave Pay rates, 2025-26 and 2026-27.

Each day is 7.6 times the hourly national minimum wage in force that day, under section 65(2) of the Paid Parental Leave Act 2010. The rate follows the financial year a day falls in.

Parental Leave Pay daily and weekly rate by financial year
Days taken inHourly minimum wageA day, before tax5 day week
2025-26$24.95$189.62$948.10
2026-27$26.44$200.94$1,004.70

Services Australia prints the same daily and weekly figures for both years. The next rate applies to days from 1 July 2027, once the 2027 minimum wage order is made.

How many days, by date of birth or adoption.

Section 31ABA sets the days for each child and the most one parent can take when they have a partner. The difference is reserved for the other parent.

Income test limits.

Your adjusted taxable income for the financial year before the earlier of the birth and your claim must be at or under the individual limit, or, with your partner's added, at or under the family limit.

Parental Leave Pay individual and family income limits

What this does not cover.

  • Services Australia decides whether you are eligible. The residency test, the exceptions to the work test, special claims and the rules for a child who was stillborn or has died are not modelled. The work test is a yes or no you enter.
  • Adjusted taxable income is entered, not worked out. It includes reportable fringe benefits, reportable super contributions, net investment losses and some other amounts.
  • Days are taken as one block, Monday to Friday, five a week. Splitting days between partners, taking them in pieces and the limit on days you can both take at the same time are not modelled.
  • Days from 1 July 2027 use the 2026-27 rate, tax rates and super rate, carried forward and marked, until the 2027 minimum wage order and the indexed income limits are published. The site will not build from 1 July 2027 until the figures are fetched again.
  • Services Australia's 15% is worked to the cent; its own rounding is not published. Employer withholding uses the 2026-27 Schedule 1 tax tables, for a resident who has given a tax file number, with no study loan.
  • Tax at tax time is for an Australian resident with no other offsets, deductions, study loan or Medicare levy surcharge, and only the low income tax offset.
  • The super figure leaves out the nominal interest amount set by the PPL rules.

Common questions.

How much is Paid Parental Leave in 2026-27?

$200.94 a day before tax, or $1,004.70 for a 5 day week, for days taken from 1 July 2026. The full 130 days for a child born or adopted from 1 July 2026 come to $26,122.20 before tax. The rate is 7.6 times the hourly national minimum wage, so it rises each 1 July with the minimum wage order.

How many days of Parental Leave Pay does a family get?

130 days, or 26 weeks of 5 days, for a child born or adopted from 1 July 2026. It was 120 days from 1 July 2025 and 110 from 1 July 2024. When you have a partner, 20 of the 130 days are reserved for the other parent, so one parent can take at most 110. For twins or triplets you get Parental Leave Pay for one child only.

Why is Parental Leave Pay not the same as the weekly minimum wage?

Because the Act uses the hourly rate, not the weekly one. A day is 7.6 hours at $26.44, $200.94 to the cent, and 5 of those make $1,004.70. The weekly national minimum wage is $1,004.90, set by the order for a 38 hour week, so a week of Parental Leave Pay is 20 cents less.

Is Parental Leave Pay taxed?

Yes. It is taxable income and goes in your tax return. An employer that pays it withholds tax at your usual rate, and Services Australia withholds 15% unless you ask for more. It also counts as income for family assistance, child support and income support payments, and you and your partner cannot get Family Tax Benefit Part B on days you are paid it, which the Family Tax Benefit Calculator explains.

Can I get Parental Leave Pay and my employer's paid parental leave?

Yes. Services Australia says you can take Parental Leave Pay before, during or after any paid or unpaid leave from your employer, including maternity or parental leave, annual leave, long service leave. The scheme does not change the leave your employer gives under an agreement or award. Taken in the same weeks, the two are added together in your pay, and the tax withheld is worked out on the total.

What is the income limit for Paid Parental Leave?

For a birth or claim from 1 July 2026, $186,487 of individual adjusted taxable income in 2025-26, or $386,525 for you and your partner together. For one between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026 it was $180,007 or $373,094 of 2024-25 income. Services Australia uses the year before the earlier of the birth and your claim.

Does my employer have to pay my Parental Leave Pay?

Your employer pays it through payroll if you have worked for them for at least 1 year before the birth or adoption, they are based in Australia, and you take a continuous block of at least 8 weeks, 5 weekdays a week, within a year of the birth. Otherwise, or if you have no job or are self-employed, Services Australia pays you every 2 weeks. Either way the amount is the same.

Is super paid on Parental Leave Pay?

Yes, for a child born or adopted from 1 July 2025. The ATO works it out after the financial year at the super guarantee rate, 12% now, and pays it into your fund automatically, with a small nominal interest amount on top. On the full 130 days that is about $3,134.66. Your employer can add super on it but does not have to.
