Teachers Award Pay Rates 2026-27: Every ECT and Teacher Level
Minimum salaries under the Educational Services (Teachers) Award 2020 (MA000077), effective from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026.
The short answer
A Level 1 early childhood teacher in long day care is paid at least $78,979 a year, which the award sets as $1,513.60 a week, or $39.83 an hour over a 38-hour week. In a preschool or school, Level 1 is $75,941 a year ($1,455.40 a week). Level 5, the top of the scale, is $109,279 in long day care and $105,076 in preschools and schools. On the Level 1 long day care salary, take-home pay after income tax and the Medicare levy is $63,186 a year.
Most government school teachers, and many teachers in Catholic and independent schools, are not paid from these tables. Their salaries are set by state instruments or enterprise agreements above the award. For the teachers it does cover, above all early childhood teachers in long day care, preschools and kindergartens, the award is the legal minimum.
MA000077 salaries by level.
The award has five levels and two salary scales. The level depends on accreditation and teaching service:
- Level 1Graduate teacher and all other teachers (as defined) including those holding provisional or conditional accreditation/registration
- Level 2Teacher with proficient accreditation/registration or equivalent
- Level 3Teacher with proficient accreditation/registration or equivalent after 3 years’ satisfactory teaching service at Level 2
- Level 4Teacher with proficient accreditation/registration or equivalent after 3 years’ satisfactory teaching service at Level 3
- Level 5Teacher with Highly Accomplished/Lead Teacher accreditation /registration or equivalent
Long day care centres
1 July 2026 · PR799357
For teachers in a service open at least 8 hours a day for 48 weeks or more a year, such as a long day care centre. Clause 17.2 sets this scale 4% above the preschool and school scale.
| Level | Annual | Weekly | Hourly * | Take-home a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | $78,979 | $1,513.60 | $39.83 | $63,186 |
| Level 2 | $86,324 | $1,654.40 | $43.54 | $68,180 |
| Level 3 | $93,976 | $1,801.00 | $47.39 | $73,384 |
| Level 4 | $101,629 | $1,947.70 | $51.26 | $78,588 |
| Level 5 | $109,279 | $2,094.30 | $55.11 | $83,790 |
Preschools and schools
1 July 2026 · PR799357
For teachers in schools, and in preschools and kindergartens that run on school terms. This Level 1 salary is also the award’s standard rate, the base for its allowances.
| Level | Annual | Weekly | Hourly * | Take-home a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | $75,941 | $1,455.40 | $38.30 | $61,120 |
| Level 2 | $83,004 | $1,590.70 | $41.86 | $65,923 |
| Level 3 | $90,362 | $1,731.70 | $45.57 | $70,926 |
| Level 4 | $97,720 | $1,872.70 | $49.28 | $75,930 |
| Level 5 | $105,076 | $2,013.70 | $52.99 | $80,932 |
Annual and weekly figures are the award’s own; clause 17.3 sets the weekly rate as the annual salary divided by 52.18. * The award prints no permanent hourly rate, so the hourly column is the weekly rate divided by the 38 ordinary hours a week in clause 10 and Schedule A. Take-home is an estimate for a single Australian resident for tax purposes with no study loan debt and no Medicare levy surcharge, calculated with the same Wage Calculator used across this site. Superannuation is paid by the employer on top of these salaries and is never deducted from them.
Casual teacher rates.
The award pays a casual teacher by the day: the weekly rate divided by 5 plus 25% for a full day, or divided by 10 plus 25% for a half day. A casual in a school is paid for at least half a day. A casual engaged for fewer than 5 consecutive days is paid no more than Level 3, $432.93 a full day in a school.
| Level | Full day, schools and preschools | Half day, schools and preschools | Full day, long day care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | $363.85 | $181.93 | $378.40 |
| Level 2 | $397.68 | $198.84 | $413.60 |
| Level 3 | $432.93 | $216.46 | $450.25 |
| Level 4 | $468.18 | $234.09 | $486.93 |
| Level 5 | $503.43 | $251.71 | $523.58 |
In a children’s service or early childhood service a casual is paid by the hour: the full day rate divided by 7.6, for at least 2 hours, then at least 4 hours, then a full day. Services open 48 weeks or more a year use the long day care scale.
| Level | Hourly, under 48 weeks | 2-hour minimum | Hourly, 48 weeks or more | 2-hour minimum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | $47.88 | $95.76 | $49.79 | $99.58 |
| Level 2 | $52.33 | $104.66 | $54.42 | $108.84 |
| Level 3 | $56.96 | $113.92 | $59.24 | $118.48 |
| Level 4 | $61.60 | $123.20 | $64.07 | $128.14 |
| Level 5 | $66.24 | $132.48 | $68.89 | $137.78 |
Every casual figure above already includes the 25% loading. Each full day, half day, 2-hour and 4-hour rate worked out this way matches Schedule B of the award to the cent, and a 4-hour minimum is twice the 2-hour figure.
Allowances paid on top of the salary.
The award’s wage-related allowances are a percentage of its standard rate, the Level 1 preschool and school salary of $75,941, so they rise with it each year. A teacher in children’s services who is the educational leader under the National Regulations is paid $4,784.28 a year, pro rata for fewer than 5 days a week. A school teacher given extra leadership duties is paid a leadership allowance of $1,215.06 to $6,075.28 a year, depending on school size and the level of responsibility.
| Director’s allowance | Places in the centre | A year |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Up to 39 places | $8,733.22 |
| Level 2 | 40 to 59 places | $10,821.59 |
| Level 3 | 60 or more places | $13,137.79 |
The director’s allowance applies to an early childhood or preschool teacher appointed as a Director (clause 19.2), pro rata for a part-time Director. The educational leader allowance is paid in addition to it.
Who this award covers, and who it does not.
The award covers teachers employed in schools and in children’s services and early childhood education, a sector clause 4.2 defines to include long day care, preschools, kindergartens and occasional care. It excludes principals and deputy principals, tutors engaged solely to teach students individually, sports coaches, and assistants, aides and directors in childcare who are not university qualified early childhood teachers.
Educators without a teaching degree are covered by a different award. Their rates are on the Children's Services Award Pay Rates page, and the educator levels a long day care centre uses are set out on the Early Childhood Educator Pay Rate page.
Government school teachers in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia work in their state’s own industrial system, because those states kept their workplace relations powers over their own public sector employees, so this national award does not reach them. Where an enterprise agreement applies to a teacher, section 57 of the Fair Work Act 2009 means the award does not apply to them either, and many Catholic and independent schools pay under such agreements. Most government school teachers and many non-government school teachers are paid under state instruments or agreements above the award, so for them the tables on this page are a floor, not the going rate.
Early childhood teachers paid above the award.
A service that receives the Commonwealth Worker Retention Payment must pay eligible early childhood teachers at least the Department of Education’s minimum hourly rates from 1 July 2026: $45.80 an hour at Level 1 on the long day care scale, 15.0% above the award’s $39.83. It is a condition of a grant the service applies for, not an award rate, so it binds only services that receive the payment. The department publishes a second set for teachers at a funded service who are paid on the preschool and school scale.
On 17 June 2026 the Government extended the payment to 30 June 2028. The extension begins on 1 December 2026, and when this page was checked on 25 September 2026 the Department had published no minimum rates for the extension period, so the table below is the current set, applying from 1 July 2026. At the long day care grant minimum a full-time Level 1 teacher earns about $90,814 a year, computed here as the hourly rate times 38 hours times 52.18 weeks.
| Level | Long day care, grant minimum | Above award | Preschools and schools, grant minimum | Above award |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | $45.80 | 15.0% | $44.04 | 15.0% |
| Level 2 | $50.06 | 15.0% | $48.14 | 15.0% |
| Level 3 | $54.50 | 15.0% | $52.41 | 15.0% |
| Level 4 | $58.94 | 15.0% | $56.68 | 15.0% |
| Level 5 | $63.38 | 15.0% | $60.94 | 15.0% |
Grant minimums from the Department of Education, Minimum rates you must pay workers, a page it dated 29 July 2026 and which was read on 19 September 2026. “Above award” compares each figure with the hourly equivalent in the tables above. Some long day care employers are also covered by the Early Childhood Education and Care Multi-Employer Enterprise Agreement 2024-2026, approved by the Fair Work Commission on 10 December 2024 for long day care work under this award and the Children’s Services Award. Where it applies it sets the pay instead of the award. It nominally expires on 30 November 2026, and its rates are not published here.

Every salary above was read from clause 17.1 of the award text at the Fair Work award library and checked three ways: each printed weekly rate equals its annual salary divided by 52.18, each long day care salary equals the preschool and school salary plus 4%, and every casual full day, half day, 2-hour and 4-hour rate worked out from the weekly rate matches the figure Schedule B prints. The level descriptions in clause 17.1 were matched against clause 14.1, and the Level 1 salary against the standard rate the allowance schedule states. No variation dated after 1 July 2026 appears in the award text. Nothing here is copied from another pay site.
What is not cross-checked
The permanent hourly rates. The award prints none, so each is the weekly rate divided by 38. The casual hourly rates are worked out by the award’s own method, and twice and four times each one equals the 2-hour and 4-hour rate the award prints.
What this page does not cover.
Listed as plainly as what it does, because a rate page that hides its gaps is how the wrong number ends up on a payslip.
Penalty rates and overtime
Schedule A sets shift, Saturday and overtime rates for teachers in services open 48 weeks or more a year. None of them is published here.
State and enterprise agreements
Government school teachers and many non-government school teachers are paid under state instruments or enterprise agreements. Those scales are not published on this page.
Part-time pay
A part-time teacher is paid pro rata by their share of a full-time face-to-face teaching load (clauses 11.4 and 17.4). This page shows full-time salaries only.
Leave loading and pro rata salary
Clauses 22 and 23 set how salary and the annual leave loading are worked out for a part year. Neither calculation is done here.
Which level applies
Accreditation and years of teaching service decide the level, under clauses 14.2 to 14.7. This page publishes the rates, not the assessment.
Principals and deputy principals
The award excludes them. Their pay is set by contract or agreement, not by this award.
Teachers Award Pay Rates questions, answered.
What is the Educational Services (Teachers) Award?
The Educational Services (Teachers) Award 2020 (MA000077) is the national modern award for teachers employed in schools and in children’s services and early childhood education, including long day care centres, preschools and kindergartens. It sets five classification levels, each with a minimum annual salary, and a separate scale for long day care that is 4% higher. Where it applies, those salaries are the legal minimum. It does not cover principals or deputy principals, and it does not reach a teacher whose pay is set by a state industrial instrument or an enterprise agreement.
What is the pay rate for a Level 1 early childhood teacher?
In a long day care centre, a Level 1 early childhood teacher is paid at least $78,979 a year, $1,513.60 a week or $39.83 an hour, from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026. In a preschool or kindergarten that runs on school terms, the Level 1 minimum is $75,941 a year, $1,455.40 a week. Level 1 covers graduates and teachers with provisional or conditional accreditation. A teacher moves to Level 2, $86,324 in long day care, on gaining proficient accreditation or its equivalent.
Why does a long day care teacher earn more than a preschool teacher under the award?
Clause 17.2 adds 4% to the long day care salaries because those teachers are not covered by clause 15, the school-year hours clause. A preschool or school teacher’s hours follow the school year: required attendance is capped at 205 days a year, and annual leave is taken in non-term weeks. A teacher in a service open at least 8 hours a day for 48 weeks or more a year works a rostered 38-hour week under Schedule A instead, and is paid the higher scale for it.
Are government school teachers paid under this award?
Generally not. Government school teachers in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia work in their state’s own industrial system, because those states kept their workplace relations powers over their own public sector employees, so a national award does not reach them. Where an enterprise agreement applies to a teacher, section 57 of the Fair Work Act 2009 means the award does not apply to them either, and many Catholic and independent schools pay under such agreements. Most government school teachers and many non-government school teachers are therefore paid under state instruments or agreements above the award. The $75,941 to $105,076 scale on this page is the floor for teachers the award does cover.
How are casual teachers paid under the award?
By the day, not by the hour, unless the work is in an early childhood service. A casual teacher’s full day rate is the weekly rate divided by 5 plus 25%, and a half day is the weekly rate divided by 10 plus 25%, so a Level 1 casual in a school is paid $363.85 a full day and $181.93 a half day. A casual in a school is paid for at least half a day. In a children’s service or early childhood service the hourly rate is the full day rate divided by 7.6, with a minimum payment of 2 hours, then 4 hours, then a full day. A casual engaged for fewer than 5 consecutive days is paid no more than Level 3.
How is a teacher’s weekly or hourly rate worked out from the annual salary?
Clause 17.3 divides the annual salary by 52.18 for the weekly rate and by 26.09 for the fortnightly rate. At Level 1 in long day care that is $78,979 divided by 52.18, printed in the award as $1,513.60 a week. The award prints no permanent hourly rate. The hourly figures on this page divide the weekly rate by the 38 ordinary hours a week in clause 10 and Schedule A, which gives $39.83 at that level. For casuals in early childhood services the award sets its own hourly method, the full day rate divided by 7.6.
Is there an allowance for an educational leader or a centre director?
Yes. A teacher in children’s services who is required to be the educational leader under the National Regulations is paid $4,784.28 a year on top of the salary, pro rata for fewer than 5 days a week. An early childhood or preschool teacher appointed as a Director is paid a director’s allowance from $8,733.22 to $13,137.79 a year, depending on the number of places in the centre. Both are set as a percentage of the Level 1 preschool and school salary, so they rise with it.
When do the teachers award rates change next?
Award rates change from the first full pay period on or after 1 July each year, following the Fair Work Commission’s Annual Wage Review. The rates on this page took effect on 1 July 2026 under determination PR799357. No later variation to these rates appears in the award text, and when this page was checked on 19 September 2026 the Commission listed no pending application to change this award. Separately, the Early Childhood Education and Care Multi-Employer Enterprise Agreement 2024-2026, which covers some long day care employers, nominally expires on 30 November 2026. The Commonwealth Worker Retention Payment, whose grant minimums sit above the award, was extended on 17 June 2026 to 30 June 2028. The extension begins on 1 December 2026, and the Department had not published rates for the extension period when this page was checked on 25 September 2026.
How much do early childhood teachers earn in Australia?
Under the award, at least $78,979 a year at Level 1 in long day care, rising to $109,279 at Level 5, and $75,941 to $105,076 in a preschool or kindergarten on the school-year scale. A service that receives the Worker Retention Payment must pay more: $45.80 an hour at Level 1 in long day care, which is $90,814 a year computed on the award's 38 hours and 52.18 weeks, and $125,672 at Level 5. On the preschool and school scale the same calculation gives $87,324 to $120,834. Those annual figures are this site's arithmetic, not published by the Department. State preschool and kindergarten agreements, such as those in Victoria and New South Wales, pay differently and are not published here.
