Social workers in public hospitals and government departments are paid under state instruments, which this page does not publish.
Where you work sets your award

Hourly figures are the weekly rate over 38 ordinary hours. Take-home is an estimate for a single Australian resident for tax purposes with no study loan debt and no Medicare levy surcharge, worked out with the same Wage Calculator used across this site. Superannuation is paid by your employer on top of these rates and is never deducted from them. A casual figure marked * is not published in the award and is the minimum hourly rate plus the 25% loading.
How a social worker moves up the scale.
Under the SCHADS Award the level follows the work. Level 4 lists a relevant four year degree with one year’s relevant experience among its prerequisites (Schedule B.4.3(b)), $46.70 an hour at pay point 1, and level 5 a relevant degree with relevant experience (B.5.3(b)). Under the Health Professionals Award, Level 1 pay rises with years of experience in the profession at Level 1, in four bands, up to $46.18 an hour at AQF Level 9 from the 7th year. Level 2 is for a senior clinician, specialist, supervisor or educator, split at five years in that role (Schedule A.2.2).
What a social worker on the award on 30 September 2026 moved to.
From the first full pay period on or after 1 October 2026, Fair Work Commission determination PR814029 replaced the Health Professionals Award’s pay point ladder. A social worker classified at level 1 or 2 on 30 September 2026 moved to the new structure under clause J.4.1 of the award, by the AQF level of their qualification and their years in the profession. The tables below are the award’s own examples for the three social work degrees. Under clause J.4.3, that employee is paid the higher of the new rate and the rate they were on at 30 September 2026, which is the last column. Community sector rates under the SCHADS Award did not change on that date.

Community sector or health service: what the same graduate is paid.
A social worker with a four year degree is paid $8.98 an hour more, or $341.17 a week, in the community sector than in a health service. The reason is an equal remuneration order (PR525485), which lifts SCHADS level 3, pay point 4 from the clause 15.3 minimum of $1,309.50 a week to $1,649.97, 126% of it. The Health Professionals Award has no equal remuneration order.
| Graduate | Community sector | Health service |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor of Social Work | $43.42Level 3, pay point 4 | $34.44AQF Level 7, 1st year |
| Master of Social Work (Qualifying) | Not namedThree and four year degrees only | $38.02AQF Level 9, 1st year |
At that rate a community sector graduate takes home about $67,823 a year after tax. How the equal remuneration order works across every SCHADS level is on SCHADS Award Pay Rates.
Which award covers a social worker.
Two modern awards cover social workers, and the employer’s business decides which: the SCHADS Award in the social and community services sector, and the Health Professionals Award in the health industry.
| Employer | Award or instrument |
|---|---|
| Community services organisation, such as a family, youth or welfare service | SCHADS Award (MA000100), clauses 3.1 and 4.1(b), social and community services, Schedule B |
| Private hospital, practice or other business delivering health care | Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020 (MA000027), clauses 4.1 and 4.2, Schedule B lists Social Worker |
| State public hospital or health service | The state or territory’s own health award or agreement. Not published here |
| Child protection or other government department | The state or territory public sector instrument. Not published here |
The SCHADS Award defines the social and community services sector to include social work, welfare work and community development work (clause 3.1), and does not cover employers and employees covered by the Health Professionals Award (clause 4.2(d)). Where an employer is covered by both, clause 4.8 of the SCHADS Award and clause 4.7 of the Health Professionals Award put the employee in the classification most appropriate to the work and the environment it is done in. A disability support role in the same organisations is on Disability Support Worker Pay Rate.
What the awards call a qualified social worker.
Neither award has a social worker classification by name. The SCHADS Award sets entry by degree length: a graduate with a relevant four year degree doing level 3 work starts at no lower than level 3, pay point 4 (Schedule B.3.1(g) and B.3.3(b)(ii)). The Health Professionals Award treats a social worker as a health professional at Level 1 once they meet the requirements to practise (Schedule A.2.1), classified by the AQF level of their qualification, which Schedule B sets at 7, 8 or 9 for a social worker, and by years of experience at Level 1. A Bachelor of Social Work is a four year degree and a Master of Social Work (Qualifying) a two year postgraduate degree, according to the Australian Association of Social Workers.
Every classification in this award, including the ones this page leaves out, is listed on the SCHADS Award Pay Rates page.

Every rate above was read from the award text at the Fair Work award library and nothing on this page is copied from another pay site. Rates change from the first full pay period on or after the effective date, so a payslip covering the changeover can lawfully carry the older figure for part of the period.
The Health Professionals Award rates were read from the same library: MA000027. The 30 September 2026 rates and the translations are from determination PR814029, read 25 September 2026. Degree lengths and AQF levels for social work qualifications are from the Australian Association of Social Workers (retrieved 27 September 2026).
What this page does not cover.
Listed as plainly as what it does, because a rate page that hides its gaps is how the wrong number ends up on a payslip.
State and public sector rates
Public hospital, child protection and other government social workers are paid under state and territory awards and agreements. None of those figures is published here.
Enterprise agreements
Many community organisations and private hospital groups pay under a registered enterprise agreement above the award. The award rate is the floor beneath it.
Penalties and overtime
Weekend, public holiday, shift and overtime rates are set separately in each award and are not in these tables. How penalty rates work across awards is on Penalty Rates.
Allowances
Allowances set by each award, such as the SCHADS sleepover and on-call allowances, are paid on top of these rates and are not included here.
Senior and manager levels
SCHADS levels 6 to 8 and Health Professional Levels 2.1 to 4 cover senior clinician, specialist, supervisor, educator and manager roles. They are on the award pages linked above.

Social Worker Pay Rate questions, answered.
How much does a social worker earn in Australia?
At least $85,798 a year ($43.42 an hour) for a graduate with a four year degree in the community sector, under the SCHADS Award, and $68,058 a year ($34.44 an hour) in a health service under the Health Professionals Award. Those are award minimums, the weekly rate times 52 on a 38-hour week, not averages. Social workers in state public hospitals and government departments are paid under state instruments instead, which this site does not publish.
What is a graduate social worker paid?
In the community sector, $43.42 an hour, or $1,649.97 a week. Schedule B.3.1(g) of the SCHADS Award says a graduate with a four year degree doing level 3 work starts at no lower than social and community services level 3, pay point 4, and a three year degree graduate at pay point 3, $42.55 an hour. In a health service, a graduate with a four year degree starts at Level 1, AQF Level 7, in the first year (clause 17.1(c) of the Health Professionals Award): $34.44 an hour, or $1,308.80 a week, from the first full pay period on or after 1 October 2026.
Which award covers a social worker?
It depends on the employer. A social worker in a community organisation is covered by the SCHADS Award (MA000100), because its definition of the social and community services sector names social work (clause 3.1) and clause 4.1(b) covers that sector. A social worker employed by a business that delivers health care, such as a private hospital or practice, is covered by the Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020 (MA000027), which lists Social Worker in Schedule B. The SCHADS Award does not cover anyone that award covers (clause 4.2(d)). Public hospitals and government departments pay under state and territory instruments.
Did social worker pay change on 1 October 2026?
Yes, in health services. From the first full pay period on or after 1 October 2026, Fair Work Commission determination PR814029 replaced the Health Professionals Award's pay point ladder. A social worker is now classified by the AQF level of the qualification they hold: $34.44 an hour in the first year at AQF Level 7 (a Bachelor of Social Work), $35.19 at AQF Level 8 (with Honours) and $38.02 at AQF Level 9 (a Master of Social Work), rising with years of experience. Before that pay period, a graduate with a four year degree was paid $33.51 an hour at level 1, pay point 3. Anyone on the award on 30 September 2026 is paid at least their old rate (clause J.4.3). SCHADS Award rates for community sector social workers did not change on that date. Every health professional translation is on Health Professional Pay Rise 2026.
Why is a community sector social worker paid more than one in a health service?
Because an equal remuneration order (PR525485) sits over the SCHADS Award's social and community services classifications and lifts them above the minimum weekly wage in clause 15. At level 3, pay point 4, it takes the clause 15.3 minimum of $1,309.50 a week to $1,649.97, 126% of it, and the award makes that the ordinary rate for all purposes. The Health Professionals Award has no equal remuneration order, so a graduate with a four year degree is paid $8.98 an hour less there.
What is the casual rate for a social worker?
Casual social workers get a 25% loading on the ordinary hourly rate under both awards. In the community sector that is $54.28 an hour at level 3, pay point 4, worked out from the weekly rate because the SCHADS Award prints no casual rates. In a health service it is $43.05 an hour at Level 1, AQF Level 7, 1st year, a figure the Health Professionals Award prints in Schedule C. The Casual Loading Calculator applies the loading to any other base rate.
Does a Master of Social Work pay more than a Bachelor of Social Work?
Under the Health Professionals Award, yes: a Masters graduate starts at Level 1, AQF Level 9, in the first year (clause 17.1(e)), $38.02 an hour, against $34.44 at AQF Level 7 for a Bachelor of Social Work. The SCHADS Award sets entry points only for three and four year degrees (Schedule B.3.1(g)), so in the community sector the level is set by the work and those two entry points, not by a master's degree as such.
Are hospital and child protection social workers paid these rates?
Usually not. Social workers in state public hospitals are paid under their state or territory health award or agreement, and child protection and other government social workers under the public sector instrument for that state or territory. Neither is a modern award, and this site publishes none of those figures, so check the current rates your employer or department publishes.
