How Many Fortnights in a Year?
There are 26 fortnights in a year, with one day left over, or two in a leap year. Because 26 fortnights is 364 days, a fortnightly payday falls a day earlier each year, and every 11 or 12 years a pay cycle fits 27 paydays into one income year. Enter any payday on your cycle to count the paydays in a year, see which months hold three, and find the years with 27. Weekly pay works the same way: 52 weeks and a day, and 53 paydays every 5 to 7 years.

- Next income years with 27 paydays
- 2037-38, 2048-49, 2059-60
27 paydays, one more than the 26 the ATO tax tables are built on, because the first payday fell close enough to the start of the year for the last one to fit before it ended. Each pay is withheld as if the year had 26, so the extra pay can leave a small shortfall at tax time. The ATO lets you ask your employer to withhold $12 more from each pay this year. It is optional.
Worked examples, with the arithmetic.
The same sums the tool runs, on real figures. Every number below is computed by the tested engine from the published rates, so the prose and the tool can never disagree.
Why is a year 26 fortnights and a day?
26 fortnights x 14 days = 364 days 365 - 364 = 1 day over 365 / 14 = 26.07 fortnights 366 / 14, a leap year = 26.14 fortnights
A fortnightly cycle repeats every 364 days, so it slips one day earlier against the calendar each year, two in a year holding 29 February. The slipped days build up until one income year fits 27 paydays, every 11 or 12 years for any one cycle.
Which cycle has 27 pays in 2026-27?
first payday = Wednesday 1 July 2026 + 26 x 14 days = Wednesday 30 June 2027 paydays in the year = 27
Only the Wednesday cycle that paid on 1 July 2026. Every other fortnightly cycle has 26. In 2027-28, which holds 29 February 2028, two cycles have 27: those whose first paydays are Thursday 1 July 2027 and Friday 2 July 2027.
What does a 27-pay year do to $2,500 a fortnight?
27 x $2,500 = $67,500 26 x $2,500 = $65,000 tax added by the 27th pay = $837.50 withheld from the 27th pay = $438.00 shortfall = $399.50 ATO extra, $12 x 27 pays = $324
The year pays $67,500 instead of $65,000. Each pay is withheld as if the year had 26, so the extra $2,500 is taxed at your marginal rate but withheld like an ordinary pay, leaving $400 short. Asking your employer for the ATO's optional $12 a pay covers $324 of it. The bands are $12 from $1,700 to $5,199, $27 from $5,200 to $7,249, $48 from $7,250 a fortnight.
What is $2,500 a fortnight as monthly pay?
26 fortnights / 12 months = 2.17 52 weeks / 12 months = 4.33 $2,500 a fortnight x 26 / 12 = $5,416.67 a month
2.17 on average: two paydays in most months and three in two months of each year, three months in a 27-pay year. To turn fortnightly pay into monthly pay, multiply by 26 and divide by 12. Doubling it undercounts the year by two fortnights.
Is this accurate, and how does it work?
The method is published rather than described. Nothing here is a black box, and the limits are listed as plainly as the workings.
- 1Find every payday on your cycle. From the payday you enter, the calculator steps forward and back in 14-day jumps, or 7-day jumps for weekly pay, and keeps every payday from the first day of the year to the last, both counted. The income year runs from 1 July to 30 June and the calendar year from 1 January to 31 December.
- 2Compare the count with the ATO's 26 and 52. The ATO tax tables, and Schedule 5 for bonuses, split a year into 52 weekly or 26 fortnightly pays. A year with one payday more than that is a 27-pay or 53-pay year. A year can never hold fewer, because 26 fortnights is a day shorter than the shortest year.
- 3Look ahead. The same count runs for each later income year on your cycle until three long years are found. A fortnightly cycle gets 27 paydays every 11 or 12 years and a weekly one gets 53 every 5 to 7.
- 4Put a figure on the extra pay. With a pay entered, the calculator multiplies it by the year's paydays. In a long income year it also shows the extra amount the ATO lets you ask your employer to withhold from each pay, read from the bands the ATO prints for 53 and 27 pay years: $12, $27 or $48 a fortnight, $3, $7 or $12 a week, depending on the pay.
Fortnights, weeks and paydays in a year.
The ATO tax tables work on 26 fortnightly and 52 weekly pays. The calendar runs a day or two longer, which is where the extra payday comes from.

What this does not cover.
- Paydays are counted on the cycle's own dates. An employer that pays a day early when a payday falls on a weekend or public holiday, such as New Year's Day, can move a pay into the year before and change the count.
- Monthly pay always has 12 paydays a year, so only weekly and fortnightly cycles are counted.
- It does not say whether a salaried job pays 27 full fortnights in a long year. That is your contract and your employer's payroll.
- The tax shortfall example assumes one job, the tax-free threshold claimed, no study loan and the 2026-27 resident rates, and the extra withholding bands are the ATO's for 2026-27. The Tax Withheld Calculator shows the withholding on any one pay.

Common questions.
How many fortnights are in a year?
26, and a day over: 365 days divided by 14 is 26.07, and 26.14 in a leap year. Pay is counted in whole paydays, so most income years hold 26 fortnightly paydays and some hold 27. Which years have 27 depends on the weekday and the week your employer pays on.
How many fortnights are in a month?
2.17 on average, 26 divided by 12. In practice most months have two fortnightly paydays and two months a year have three, or three months in a 27-pay year. To turn fortnightly pay into monthly, multiply by 26 and divide by 12; the Monthly Pay Calculator does it with the tax.
Which years have 27 fortnightly pays?
It depends on your cycle, which is why the calculator asks for a payday. In 2026-27 it is the cycle whose first payday is Wednesday 1 July 2026. In 2027-28 it is the cycle whose first payday is Thursday 1 July 2027 or Friday 2 July 2027. In 2028-29 it is the cycle whose first payday is Saturday 1 July 2028. In 2029-30 it is the cycle whose first payday is Sunday 1 July 2029. Two cycles qualify in a year holding 29 February. Every other cycle has 26 in that year.
Do I get paid more in a 27-pay year?
If you are paid for the hours you work, each pay covers its own fortnight of work, so a 27-pay year simply pays for 27 fortnights, and the years between pay for 26 while 26 fortnights and a day go by. If you are on a salary, whether the year pays 27 full fortnights or spreads the salary across 27 pays is set by your contract and your employer's payroll, not by tax law. Ask payroll which applies. The calculator shows the year's gross both ways.
Will I owe tax in a 27-pay year?
Possibly a little. Each fortnightly pay is withheld from the Fortnightly Tax Table, which assumes 26 pays, so a 27th full pay adds a fortnight of income at your marginal rate but only one ordinary pay's withholding. On $2,500 a fortnight that leaves about $400 short. The ATO lets you ask your employer to withhold an extra $12, $27 or $48 a fortnight, depending on your pay, which on $2,500 is $12 a pay, or $324 over the year. It is optional and happens only if you ask.
Does a payday on 1 July count in this tax year or the next?
The next one. Pay counts in the income year it is paid in, so a payday on 30 June belongs to the year ending that day and a payday on 1 July starts the new one. That is how a cycle paying on 1 July fits 27 paydays into the year: 26 fortnights later is 30 June, still inside it.
How many weekly pays are in a year?
52, with a day over, or two in a leap year. A weekly payday that falls on the first day of the income year, or the first two in a year holding 29 February, gets 53 pays in that year, which comes round every 5 to 7 years for each weekday. The ATO's optional extra withholding for a 53-pay year is $3, $7 or $12 a week, set out with the Weekly Tax Table.
