Health Services Award Pay Rates 2026-27: Both Streams
Minimum rates under the Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020 (MA000027), effective from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026.
The short answer
A support services employee at level 1 is paid $26.97 an hour or $1,024.70 a week full-time. A casual at the same classification is paid $33.71 an hour, including the 25% casual loading. On that full-time wage, take-home pay after income tax and the Medicare levy is $45,713 a year, or $1,758 a fortnight.
That is level 1 in clause 16, the support services ladder, and it is the figure this award is most often misquoted on. The award has a second minimum rates clause: clause 17 pays a health professional employee $30.89 an hour and $1,174.00 a week at level 1 pay point 1, up to $71.19 an hour at level 4 pay point 4. Both ladders are published below, 21 rates in one and 19 in the other. Level 1 in one is not level 1 in the other.

Clause 16, support services employees
The first of the award’s two minimum rates clauses. 21 rates in three tables, of which two are transitional and stop applying after 31 December 2026. Level 1 here is $26.97 an hour, and it is not the same classification as level 1 in clause 17 below.

Transitional, and not cross-checked
This table stops applying after 31 December 2026, as the award’s own heading for it says. Its 4 rates are among the 8 of 40 on this page that could not be joined to Schedule C automatically: the clause names each classification by qualification and industry experience, while the schedule names the same 4 rows by level alone, Level 3, Level 5, Level 6 and Level 7. All 4 were read a second time by hand against the schedule and agree. The award publishes no casual rate for any of them, so every casual figure here is marked and derived from the minimum hourly rate.

Clause 17, health professional employees
The second minimum rates clause, and the one the site previously published nothing for. 19 pay points across four levels. The level 1 pay points are named by entry qualification rather than by years of service, and pay point 2 is the rate the award defines its allowances against. Level 1 pay point 1 is $30.89 an hour, $3.92 above level 1 in clause 16.

Take-home is an estimate for a single Australian resident for tax purposes with no study loan debt and no Medicare levy surcharge, calculated with the same Wage Calculator used across this site. Superannuation is paid by your employer on top of these rates and is never deducted from them. A casual rate marked * is not published in the award and is the minimum hourly rate plus the 25% loading.

- 32 of 40 rates against Schedule C
Every rate above was read from the award text at the Fair Work award library and then checked a second time against Schedule C of the same award, which republishes the hourly rates. Casual rates are the award’s own published figures except where marked *, which the award does not publish. Nothing here is copied from another pay site.
What is not cross-checked
8 of the 40 rates above are not cross-checked against Schedule C. They are the 4 dental assistant and 4 pathology collector rates in the two transitional tables, and they are named as such where they appear. The rates clause identifies those classifications by qualification and industry experience, while the schedule names the same rows by level alone: Level 3, Level 5, Level 6 and Level 7 for the dental assistant table, and Level 5, Level 6, Level 7 and Level 7 for the pathology collector table. Those names neither match the clause nor stay unique within the schedule, so no automatic join between the two is possible.
All 8 were instead read a second time by hand against Schedule C.1.8 and C.1.9 of the award, and all 8 agree. The award publishes no casual rate for any of them either, so all 8 casual figures in those two tables are marked with an asterisk and are the minimum hourly rate plus the 25% loading. Both tables stop applying after 31 December 2026, after which the rest of this page still stands and those eight rows do not.
What this page does not cover.
Listed as plainly as what it does, because a rate page that hides its gaps is how the wrong number ends up on a payslip.
Penalty and shift rates
Saturday, Sunday, public holiday, shift and overtime work is paid above these rates under a separate part of the award. None of it is published here.
Allowances
The award sets its allowances against a standard rate, which it defines as health professional employee level 1 pay point 2. The amounts themselves are published separately.
State awards and agreements
Most public hospital and state health service staff are covered by a state award or enterprise agreement instead, paying above this floor. No figure for those is published here.
Health Services Award Pay Rates questions, answered.
What are the health services award pay rates for 2026?
The Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020 (MA000027) sets minimum rates in two separate clauses and this page publishes both. Clause 16, support services employees, runs from $26.97 an hour and $1,024.70 a week at level 1 up to $39.42 an hour at level 9 pay point 3, 21 rates in three tables. Clause 17, health professional employees, runs from $30.89 an hour and $1,174.00 a week at level 1 pay point 1 up to $71.19 an hour at level 4 pay point 4, 19 pay points across four levels. That is 40 rates in total, all effective from 1 July 2026.
What is level 1 under the health services award?
It depends which of the award's two rates clauses covers the work, and this is where published figures for this award most often go wrong. A support services employee at level 1 under clause 16 is paid $1,024.70 a week and $26.97 an hour. A health professional employee at level 1 pay point 1 under clause 17 is paid $1,174.00 a week and $30.89 an hour. Both are called level 1 and they are $3.92 an hour apart. Quoting $30.89 as the award's level 1 rate, or $26.97 as a health professional's, is the same error in opposite directions. Both tables are above, each under its own clause.
What are the allied health award pay rates?
Check your state award or enterprise agreement first, because for most allied health workers in Australia this award is not the instrument that applies. Allied health is overwhelmingly employed by state and territory health services, under state awards and enterprise agreements that pay above the federal floor, and no figure for any of those is published here. There is no separate allied health modern award. If you are employed in the national system, in private practice for instance, the clause 17 health professional ladder above is the floor: $30.89 an hour at level 1 pay point 1, $32.09 at pay point 2, up to $71.19 an hour at level 4 pay point 4.
Am I a support services employee or a health professional employee?
The award's classification definitions decide it, and the dividing line is the qualification the role is entered on. The clause 17 level 1 pay points are named by that qualification: Pay point 1 (UG 2 qualification), Pay point 2 (3 year degree entry), Pay point 3 (4 year degree entry), Pay point 4 (Masters degree entry), Pay point 5 (PhD entry). The clause 16 support services levels are not defined that way. If the role required a relevant degree to start, read clause 17 first. At level 1 the two clauses are $3.92 an hour apart, so the classification is worth getting right before comparing a payslip against either table.
Are dental assistant and pathology collector rates still separate?
Yes, until 31 December 2026, which is the date in the award's own headings for both tables. A dental assistant is graded by qualification and industry experience from $29.11 to $31.67 an hour. A pathology collector is graded the same way, from $30.45 to $32.67 an hour. Those 8 rates are the ones on this page that are not cross-checked against Schedule C, 8 of 40, because the rates clause and the schedule name the same rows differently. They were read a second time by hand instead, and the award publishes no casual rate for any of them, so all 8 casual figures in those two tables are derived and marked. After 31 December 2026 both tables stop applying.
Is the health services award rate different in NSW or Queensland?
No. MA000027 is a national instrument, so a support services employee at level 1 is paid at least $26.97 an hour in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and every other state and territory. What differs is which instrument covers the employer. Most public hospital and state health service employees are covered by a state award or an enterprise agreement instead, such as the Health Professionals (State) Award in New South Wales or a Queensland Health practitioner agreement, and those pay above the federal floor. This page publishes no figure for any of them, so a public sector payslip should be checked against its own agreement rather than against these tables.
